Our Motivation

A Marathon for Men's Mental Health, In Honour of Jimbo. (Read more)

We are raising funds for men’s mental health and suicide prevention, in memory of our uncle Jimbo.

Jimbo lived for his sport, so it seems only right to do a physical activity in his memory. On June 23rd Christy will be running a kilometre for every year of his life. A marathon is 42.2 kilometres, Jimbo died at 42 years and two months, or 42.2 years of age. This is nothing more than a shocking coincidence however it is quite impressive so you should probably donate. Hannah will be doing the half marathon (less impressive).

Since his death, and after some research, it’s become clear that men’s mental health is generally misunderstood by a lot of charities, organisations and even psychiatrists.

We are working with Movember because they do not simply tell depressed men to talk more, love themselves, and “take this pill”. Instead, they assist men in taking the action required to feel capable again, such as being physically fit and social.

Where will the donations be going?
Movember supports various types of cancer research, men’s health and men’s mental health & suicide prevention. After discussions with Movember, we've been assured that most of our funds will go towards their new largest project: The Ahead of the Game programme - Working alongside the GAA to better young men and boys’ mental health. The programme aims to equip young people with the skills to identify mental health problems, help build the skills to manage their own well-being and support their teammates.

Movember’s Ahead of the Game programme has been shown to significantly decrease psychological distress in young male players, significantly improve the wellbeing and resilience among young male players and help players understand where to seek help and support.

Anybody who knew Jimbo knows the role that Gaelic football (and other sports) played in his enjoyment of life, making this a perfectly fitting way of honouring him.
