Meet James Mooney, also known as The Wandering Paddy. A storyteller with a heart as big as Ireland itself, James has found a remarkable way to share his journey through life’s challenges, not just as a poet but as an advocate for mental health.
This November, he’s lending his voice and words to Movember, using his passion for poetry to uplift and inspire men everywhere.
James’ powerful piece, “You’re a Good Man, They Say,” taps into the quiet strength, struggles, and resilience of men navigating mental health battles.
For James, poetry wasn’t always part of his story. His path to this creative outlet began after facing a health diagnosis that changed everything. Like many men, James initially struggled with how to process his emotions and feared letting others see the weight he carried. Yet, through vulnerability and resilience, he found an unexpected avenue for release and self-expression: poetry.
Writing became a means of processing his experiences, of making sense of the internal battles he faced. It also gave him a new purpose, a way to reach others with empathy and encouragement.
The Wandering Paddy was born out of James’ desire to share his story, hoping that by doing so, he might help others feel seen and understood.
He also notes that gaming has become a significant outlet for men, particularly within his group. James says:
“I'm a member of the 22A, a community initially formed for veterans but now open to those who haven’t served.”
Inspired by the 22A movement, originally based in the UK, raising awareness about the 22 daily suicides connected to military service, the group brings together veterans from around the world.
“Gaming offers us a space to unwind, connect, and support each other. We’ve implemented something called the "Bro Check," a practice carried over from the military, where we routinely check in on each other to ensure everyone’s okay. For many of us, these gaming sessions and regular check-ins are lifelines, fostering camaraderie and helping to maintain our mental health through challenging times.”
You’re a good man, they say,
Even when you doubt yourself every day,
When the load feels too heavy, the night too long,
When the silence cuts deeper than the loudest song.
You’re a good man, they say,
And I hope you believe it one day.
This Movember, James’s piece “You’re a good man, they say” is a tribute to every man who silently carries his struggles, showing up every day despite the weight on his shoulders. The poem touches on themes of identity, strength, and mental health, resonating with men from all walks of life.

Through his poetry, James is helping break the stigma around men’s mental health. His words remind us of the strength in vulnerability, of the courage it takes to face life’s challenges head-on. Movember has always championed men’s mental health, and James’ voice is a vital part of this message. With his words, he’s reaching men who might be struggling silently, letting them know that it’s okay to seek support, to lean on others, and to speak their truth.
James Mooney’s journey is a testament to the power of self-expression and the importance of mental health. This Movember, we’re inviting everyone to read “You’re a good man, they say” and reflect on the men in their lives who might need a little extra support.
