My motivation

This is my 8th year participating in Movember. I’m running the Dublin Marathon and also running 5km each day of November.

I like to do a running challenge each year and this hairy season is no different. Keep up to date by following me on Instagram @dardeece

Previously I ran the Dublin Marathon, I pounded the pavements of NY 2 years in a row when I lived there and this year I'm going to do something similar and clock up the KMs. I ran 225km last year.

I take part in Movember to try help those who may be struggling with mental health issues, like myself. A few years ago I found myself in a really rough patch and it was only when I began to talk about how I felt, first with a therapist and then my friends and then family, that I began to feel things becoming somewhat better.

I was really lucky to have access to the help I needed by approaching my college at the time - it felt like telling someone I didn’t know that I needed help was easier than asking those closest to me. It’s hard to explain. The important thing was that I asked someone for help. Friends and family followed in due time.

There are people out there that are really struggling, and lots doing so in complete silence. I'm taking part in this year's Movember campaign as I want to help end the stigma that exists, particularly amongst younger men, that talking about your feelings makes you any less a man. If only one man feels that by my talking or my efforts to encourage guys to talk about their feelings helps them to speak up when they're going through a tough time then I've achieved something.

I also want to highlight that men older than myself go through some dark times and this can't be overlooked - look out for your Dad(s), Uncles, Grandads and make sure their mental health is just as much a concern as their physical health.

Globally, the rate of suicide is alarmingly high, particularly in men. Movember is aiming to reduce the rate of male suicide by 25% by 2030, and I want to help them get there. Help me stop men dying too young.

Thanks to everyone!

Best of luck Charlie I know the RUN up to Christmas in retail can be stressful, but surely there are easier ways to get a few hours’ peace! Fair play to you though, it’s all for a brilliant cause. No doubt you’ll smash it!
