Men's health
Mental health and suicide prevention

This is my 7th year participating in Movember.

I sat out last year for eye surgery. Bonkers to think that was only 12 months ago. Doctors and surgeons want the best for you and work hard to deliver those exact results. I am grateful for their effort and care. Success! Phew.

Rock in.

Following my recovery, I reconnected with friends from my teenaged years. Heartwarming to know that the dudes that you grew up with 30+ years ago are still cool, smart and fun. Heck, more so.

Shame on me. No need to wait all that time to reconnect with buddies. They want to catch up and hang out.

Buddies together. Buddies apart. Buddies passed.

Nothing marginal.

Friendship matters. Old and new alike. It keeps you sane. It gives you more than you can possibly type into a digital box.

Rock on.

I have been looking forward to Movember. It is a reset, a restart, and a recharge. It is all the energy and good vibes intrinsic to this month’s long journey of activity, fundraising, and most importantly, connection.

I will embark on a journey that includes a moustache, a bit of fitness and the usual shaking down of family, friends, and colleagues for the cause. I am not particularly comfortable asking for money. Charity is personal. But, as I've gotten older, or at least, begun to admit it, I see the reasons why raising awareness for men's mental health is important to do.

It is important to be there. Being there, is not just about occupying space. It is about being alive and engaged with your world. It is about attention, connection, and empathy.

Activity, no matter how small, helps you progress towards this state. Physical health informs mental health. It changes your mindset in positive ways. Movement is fun and helps you develop good habits. Further, minding your health helps you stick around, mind others you care for, and be there for others you did not know you care for.

Rock out.

Wow! The Camden Navitas community raised €1,555 for Movember and yesterday, for their generosity, I rowed 31,100 meters in 2 hours, 27 minutes and 11 seconds. I am beyond grateful for the enthusiasm and support I received in this endeavour. Thank you.

The legendary Instructor Paul Groome of 360 Hot Yoga led a brave group of friends and family in a 60 minute Mo-ga(?). I am confident that he helped everyone work up a sweat and find their way out of their comfort zone. The class was challenging and restorative, exhilarating and peaceful. It was really an amazing experience and event. 360 Hot Yoga’s support and generosity is so appreciated. It is such a good and welcoming space. Thank you.

Look at all those athletes pictured above in black & white. They may appear a rag tag, motley crew but they are simply a collection of the raddest people, a vibrant mix of positive energy and spirit, of place-your-heart-on-your-sleeve and WE will get it done community. Today, at Camden Navitas, Coach Ben, organised an in house competition to help support Movember. 3 rounds of different workouts for mixed teams to determine the top 5. Their reward - another workout. It was a brilliant day full of even brighter performances by so many extraordinary people. I felt like I was in a feel good sports movie where everyone won. Thanks to everyone who participated today. All amazing. All champ.

Yesterday, I rowed 28.8K. Why? Well, let me tell you. I am fortunate to be part of a first rate community of hero athletes that is Navitas Camden. For every €5 donated from its members, I rowed 100 metres. They raised €1,480 for men’s mental health and suicide prevention. In these uncertain times, I am so very grateful for their support and encouragement. I have never ever been happier doing physical fitness. Absolutely buzzing. Special thanks to Alex, Ben, Conrado, Des and Jacob for creating the space to make this happen. Up Navitas Camden! Stay CHAMP!

205 Week(s) Ago

I rowed 37,000 meters in under 4 hours this morning with a little help from my friends. It was epic. More importantly, the Navitas Camden Community raised €1,850 for Movember (100 meters for every €5 donated). My focus is on men’s mental health and suicide prevention. Movember tackles some of the most significant health issues faced by men. It is a worthy cause. My heartfelt thanks to the entire gang is infinite. Everyone deserves a knowing nod or a fist bump or a high five or a hug. Whatever it is you’re into is absolutely well earned. Stay fun. Stay rad. Stay CHAMP.

Duty calls and the crew went off to the 40 Foot to give support to Ross Galvin on his Movember journey. He is swimming 15 km in the open water to raise awareness for the cause. I am in awe of his effort and commitment. He is brave. Plus, it was a rad day out in the sea. I jumped in. The sea is ice cold. I lasted for all of 5 minutes. My crew are made of much sterner stuff than I. Big love to Ross Galvin. Success!
