My motivation

My name’s Jack Rooney. I’m a 23-year-old coach and athlete from Ireland. On August 24th, I’m going to run 100km along the west coast of Ireland — to raise awareness and funds for men’s mental health.

No race. No medal. Just roads — and a real reason.

I’m not one for silverware or podiums. Some might say I haven’t earned the right to run this ultra. But what I do have is conviction, and a message I refuse to stay quiet about.

Fitness changed my life in my teens. I was in a rough spot and training gave me the structure and identity I needed to climb out. But not everyone makes it out. I’ve lost people to this. My family has felt that heartbreak. My friends too. And the common thread I see is young men — all suffering in silence.

I don’t claim to have the solution. I don’t pretend to have the answers. But I do know this: young men need to see what it looks like to speak up, to move, to keep going. If even one man sees himself in this and decides to take just one more step then that’s everything.

This is more than a run. It’s a statement. It’s raw, real, and necessary. It’s something I’ve never gone into detail on which is exactly why I need to.

From now until August, I’ll be documenting every early morning, every training session, every setback and win. I’ll do everything I can to make sure this message spreads far and wide.
