Davy Russell, seen by many as one the most progressive National Hunt jockeys of the modern era, was announced as Horse Racing Ireland’s ambassador this week. And no-better-a-man either as Davy and fellow weightroom colleagues David Casey and Andrew McNamara have saddled up for Moustache Season 2011.
Movember is a cause that’s close to Davy’s heart as his uncle has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. “It’s a bit strange waking up in the morning with a moustache” said Davy, “ but anything we can do to create awareness is a good thing”.
Fellow jockey David Casey’s life has also been affected by prostate cancer having lost a friend to the disease last year. “A lot of men are afraid to talk about health problems” said David but he hopes that by growing him Mo he can create awareness and change men’s attitude towards their health.
The lads will be joining all the Irish Mo Bro jockeys in a mass shave-down on the Sunday of the Premier Jump Racing Weekend in Fairyhouse.
